Eagles Edge Altamont, 14-13; N. Clay Wins In Baseball Action

NEWTON -- The start of the game was a 1-1 tie between Altamont and Newton in high school baseball action Thursday. And, from there, it just got more exciting as both teams banged out 12 hits and Newton pulled out a 14-13 win.

Altamont edged ahead in the top of the first before Newton tied in the bottom of the frame. The Indians then tallied a single run in the second to lead 2-1 and moved that to 6-1 in the top of the third.

However, the Eagles came back with three runs to pull within 6-4. Altamont got back on track with a three-run top of the fourth to lead 9-3 but here came Newton.

The Eagles tallied five in the bottom of the fourth then had three runs cross the plate in the fifth to pull into a 12-9 lead.

Then it was Altamont's turn. The Indians rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth to lead 13-12. Nathan Shepard hit a home run that pushed the Indians ahead.

Once again, that didn't last long. The Eagles came back, scoring two runs in the bottom of the frame on a two-run homer by Carder Reich to lead 14-13.

Altamont wasn't giving up. The Indians again rallied and had runners on base. Mason Robinson doubled in the seventh but on a fly ball, was ruled out for leaving base early and the game ended.

Both teams had 12 hits. Newton was led by Reich with a single, double, home run and four RBI while Max Meinhart had two doubles and five RBI. Owen Mahaffey added two singles and a double. Peyton Harris and Gus Bierman had a single and drove in a run each.

Altamont was led by Eli Miller with two singles, a double and two RBI, Robinson with two singles and a double and Shepard with a single, home run and four RBI. Jared Hammer and Kaidyn Miller added a single and an RBI each.

At Albion

Clutch hitting by Alex Boose, Cody Zimdars and Daniel Warren led North Clay (Louisville) past Edwards Coundy (Albion), 7-6 Thursday.

Ian Jones picked up the pitching win, going two innings to shut down Edwards County for the win in eight innings.

The Cardinals are now 2-1 on the season.
