Former Cardinals Player Tim McCarver Dies

Tim McCarver died Thursday at age 81.

McCarver played Major League Baseball from 1959 to 1980, mostly with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was a two-time All-Star player and a member of two World Series winning teams and finished second in voting for the 1967 National League Most Valuable Player award.

McCarver also played for the Philadelphia Phillies, the Montreal  Expos and the Boston Red Sox. He appeared in the major leagues in four different decades.

After retiring from Major League Baseball in 1980, he became an announcer on television and is best known for his 18-year partnership on Fox with play-by-play announcer, Joe Buck. He became a three-time Emmy Award winner for color commentator.

McCarver’s death was announced by baseball’s Hall of Fame, which said he died Thursday morning in Memphis, Tennessee, where he was with his family.
