Effingham St. Anthony edged Newton St. Thomas, 10-9 in the Class 1A Oblong Baseball Regional Wednesday.

The Bullpups held a 3-0 lead until the third when St. Thomas moved ahead in the top of the frame, 4-3. But the Bullpups tied the score in the bottom of the frame. St. Thomas led 8-4 in the top of the fourth, but once again, St. Anthony came back and tallied five runs to lead 9-8.

St. Thomas knotted the score in the sixth and the game went into the eighth before St. Anthony pulled out the victory.

The Bullpups had 13 hits in the contest led by Eric Utz with a single, two doubles and four RBI, Jonny Gannaway had three singles and two RBI, Hayden Bushur four singles and Will Bierman two singles and an RBI. Quentin Stephens had an RBI.

Stephens was the winning pitcher, going four innings, allowing one run on two hits, one walk while striking out five.

In the second game, Sigel St. Michael pounded Palestine/Hutsonville, 16-1 in three innings.

The Sharpshooters ran off to a 12-0 first inning lead. St. Michael had a 15-hit attack led by Brandt Niebrugge with two singles and four RBI, Adyn Heuerman with two singles and three RBI, Mason Platz with two singles and two RBI and Alex Mayer and Victor Walk with two singles and an RBI each. Evan Fearday added two singles.

Bryce Niebrugge picked up the pitching win, going one inning, allowing no runs on no hits, no walks while striking out three.

The third contest was an easy win for Effingham Sacred Heart over Oblong, 12-2. No other information was provided.

Class 1A Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Regional

 Altamont and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City were the local teams to move on after the first round of the CHBC Regional Wednesday.

Altamont handed Findlay Okaw Valley a 6-3 loss. No other information was provided.

In the second contest, CHBC blanked Ramsey, 15-0 in three innings.

Kendrick Stoldt threw a no-hitter for the winners. Stoldt went three innings, facing the minimum number of batters. He struck out seven of the nine batters he faced.

CHBC was consistent with five runs in the first, five in the second and five in the third innings.

The Bobcats had seven hits led by Isaac Wells with a single, triple and an RBI, Connor Vaughn with a single, double and two RBI, Porter Lilly with a double and an RBI and Griffin Vaughn and Cale Reed with a single and two RBI each.

In the third contest, Mattoon St. John's trounced Mulberry Grove, 14-0.

Regional action continues Saturday as Altamont faces top-seeded Neoga at 10 a.m. while second-seeded CHBC meets third-seeded Mattoon St. John's at noon. The winners advance to the championship Monday.

Class 2A Casey-Westfield Regional

Casey-Westfield, Cumberland and Red Hill (Bridgeport) picked up victories in the Casey-Westfield Regional Wednesday.

Casey-Westfield won over Marshall, 7-5 while Cumberland easily handled Kansas, 16-1. Red Hill edged Lawrenceville Parkview, 5-4.

The host squad now faces top-seeded Jasper County at 10 a.m. Saturday while Cumberland and Red Hill square off at 12:30 p.m.

The winners advance to the championship scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Monday.

 

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional

Shelbyville Moulton captured the first victory of the regional by downing Brownstown/St. Elmo 12-1 Wednesday.

In the second contest, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg won over North Clay/Clay City, 10-2.

North Clay/Clay City ended the season with a 4-15 record.

Shelbyville Moulton advanced to meet top-seeded South Central at 10 a.m. Saturday while Windsor/Stew-Stras will take on second-seeded Teutopolis at noon.

The winners advance to the regional champoinship Monday at 4 p.m.

 

Class 3A Charleston Regional

Effingham edged Paris Mayo in opening round play at the Charleston Regional Wednesday.

The Mustangs won 2-1. Paris Mayo edged out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Effingham tied in the fourth and produced the winning run on a walkoff single by Carson Fox in the eighth. Other hits included singles by Westin Hayes, with an RBI, T.J. Raddatz and Carter Braddy.

Braddy started on the mound for Effingham and went 6 2/3 innings, allowing one run on five hits and 10 strikeouts. Hayes came on for the win, going 1 1/3 innings, allowing one walk.

Mattoon won the opener over Robinson Nuttall by a 10-0 count.

Effingham, seeded third, improves to 11-7 and advances to face second-seeded Tolono Unity at noon Saturday. In the opener, top-seeded Charleston will meet Mattoon at 10 a.m.
