The St. Louis Cardinals won their eighth straight game Monday night in the start of a five-game series, defeating the Chicago Cubs 1-0.
The game was decided by two things, a one-hit shutout performance by Jordyn Montgomery and a line drive home run to left center by Albert Pujols.
Drew Smyly was the tough luck loser for the Cubs, allowing just four hits in seven innings of work, but those hits included Pujols' homer.
The Cubs and Cardinals play a doubleheader today at Wrigley Field.
