The 26-year-old was playing in his sixth major league game when he socked the home run in the fourth inning for his first major league hit.
A 16-year-old boy caught Matijevic’s home run ball, and ESPN reported that he gave it back in exchange for a package that included six tickets, six batting practice passes, a ball signed by Jose Altuve and a jersey signed by Justin Verlander.
Pirates Rookie Hits Three Home Runs
Pittsburgh Pirates rookie Jack Suwinski hit three home runs against the San Francisco Giants Sunday, including the ninth-inning walkoff that give the Pirates a 4-3 win.
It was the first time in MLB history that a rookie had a three-homer game that included a walk-off home run, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. The 23-year-old had solo home runs in the fourth and sixth innings before getting his walk-off in the ninth.
Padres Machado Sprains Ankle
San Diego Padres star Manny Machado left the game against the Colorado Rockies in the first inning Sunday when he injured his ankle with what turned out to be a sprain.
The third baseman hurt his ankle when he fell while running out a ground ball to first base, and left the field with help, clearly in pain. The Padres said after the game, which the Rockies won 8-3, that X-rays on Machado’s ankle were negative. Acting manager Ryan Flaherty said, “All in all, it’s as good as it could be,” but said it’s uncertain how long Machado will be out.
