The Los Angeles Angels fired manager Joe Maddon Tuesday amid the MLB team’s 12-game losing streak, one loss shy of the longest in franchise history. They have gone 3-16 overall since May 15.

Third base coach Phil Nevin will be the interim manager for the rest of the season. Maddon has a 130-148 record with the Angels since he was hired before the pandemic-shortened 2020 season.

Astros Neris, Baker Suspended

Houston Astros pitcher Hector Neris was suspended for four games by Major League Baseball and manager Dusty Baker for one after Monday’s 7-4 loss to the Seattle Mariners.

Neris hit Ty France in the ninth inning with a pitch that nearly went all the way behind him. That led to the benches clearing and an umpire warning. Then Neris threw behind Eugenio Suarez’s head, leading to automatic ejections for him and Baker.
