St. A, WSS, N. Clay Claim Baseball Regional Crowns

Brownstown/St. Elmo took a 1-0 first inning lead on Effingham St. Anthony in the Class 1A Altamont Baseball Regional championship game and held that until the fourth.

St. Anthony then knotted the score in the fourth and came up with two runs in the fifth to pull out a 3-1 victory and earn the regional championship Monday.

The Bulldogs had eight hits in the contest. Connor Roepke had a double and knocked in a run while Eli Link had two singles and an RBI. Will Hoene finished with two doubles and Beau Adams added a double. Eli Levitt and Angelo Mendella had a single each.

Colton Fearday threw a six-hitter with one walk while striking out 14.

The Bombers finished with six hits. Cade Schaub had two singles while Adam Atwood, Brady Maxey, Dalton Myers and Kyle Behl all produced a single each. Wyatt Chandler had an RBI.

Brownstown/St. Elmo finished the season with an 11-12 record.

St. Anthony advances to its own sectional Thursday where the Bulldogs will take on National Trail Conference foe Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg at 4 p.m.

Tickets for the sectional, which will be held at Paul Smith Field, will be $7 per person as stipulated by the IHSA and the tickets must be purchased online at GOFAN.co. Cash will not be accepted at the gate

Class 1A Casey-Westfield Regional

Gavan Wernsing came up big as the Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Hatchets continued to roll along and this time the Casey-Westfield Regional crown became theirs Monday.

Wernsing took the mound and went the entire seven innings, throwing a no-hitter. Wernsing walked only one and struck out 11 in the feat.

The Hatchets edged out to a 1-0 lead on Casey-Westfield then tacked on a second run in the third. The final run came in the sixth.

WSS had eight hits led by Tyler Wetherell with a single and a solo home run. Samuel Vonderheide added two singles while Graham Kasey had a single and drove in a run.

The Hatchets are now 20-4 on the season and advance to the St. Anthony Sectional Thursday where they will face St. Anthony at 4 p.m. In the opening game, North Clay takes on Bethany Okaw Valley at 4 p.m. Wednesday. The winners advance to the sectional championship Saturday at 11 a.m.

Class 1A North Clay Regional

North Clay (Louisville) captured its own regional by beating South Central, 5-1 Monday.

South Central took a 1-0 first inning lead and North Clay tied in the fourth. The Cardinals then broke loose with four runs in the sixth.

North Clay had only two hits but was aided by four South Central errors.

Bryton Griffy and Holden Clifton had the only hits. Griffy had a double and drove in three runs while Clifton had a single. Carson Burkett finished with an RBI.

Donnie  Zimmerman went 6.2 innings allowing one run on seven hits, three walks and striking out seven for the win. Burkett came on to get the final out.

South Central was led by Aidan Dodson with a solo homer, Anthony Buonaura with a double and Ethan Watwood with two singles.

Norht Clay will meet Bethany Okaw Valley at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the St. Anthony Sectional.
