Effingham got a run in the first inning and made it stand up until a three-run breakout in the sixth inning on the way to a 4-0 victory and a 1-0 lead in the 2022 City Baseball Series Wednesday.

Kaden Nichols led off the first, reaching base on an error. Nichols was sacrificed over to second by Gauge Massey. He then came home on a single by Jack Harper.

The Bulldogs kept the Hearts quiet until the sixth. Massey led off the frame with a single and Harper followed with a single. Quest Hull singled home a run and another RBI came on a fielder's choice hit by Max Hardiek.

Things were pretty quiet on the Bulldogs front. In the first five innings, only Connor Roepke and Angelo Mendella reached base, Roepke on a single and Mendella by drawing a walk. The Buldogs had two runners on in the sixth as Beau Adams drew a walk and Colton Fearday singled. But EHS pitcher Josh McDevitt got tough and struck out the final out.

McDevitt finished with a big effort on the mound allowing only two hits and two walks while striking out six.

Eli Levitt also threw a tough contest, going the distance allowing four runs on five hits, two walks and striking out six.
