Hearts Split With Trojans, St. A Falls To S'ville

CHARLESTON -- Effingham and Charleston split an Apollo Conference baseball doubleheader Friday.

In the opener, Quest Hull did the opposing Trojans no favors, picking up five hits over five at-bats and leading EHS to a 13-4 pounding of Charleston.

Hull managed to rap out singles in the first, third, sixth and seventh and homered in the fifth. He finished with three RBI.

The Hearts led 2-0 in the first, 5-0 in the fifth and 7-3 in the sixth. EHS then tallied six more runs in the seventh as Gabe Eaton, Kaiden Nichols, John Harper and Camden Raddatz powered the big inning with RBI.

Harper finished with two singles, a home run and three RBI while Raddatz finished with a single, double and two RBI. Eaton had two singles and an RBI and Gauge Massey two singles.

Josh McDevitt owned the mound, going six innings allowing three runs on no hits, three walks while striking out 15.

In the second contest, the Hearts suffered a tough-luck loss, 3-2. The Trojans held a 1-0 lead in the second and a 2-0 lead in the third.  Efifngham came back with single runs in the fourth and fifth to knot the score. But Charleston had a run in the bottom of the fifth to pull out the victory.

John Harper and Myle Maxedon had a single and an RBI each for the Hearts. Brayden Pals threw a six-hitter, giving up two walks and striking out 11 for the loss.

In junior varsity play, Effingham claimed the doubleheader.

The Hearts won the opener 15-5 behind a 13-hit attack. Kaiden Koberlein had three singles and drove in three runs to lead the Hearts. Ethan Jones had a double and two RBI. Braden Verdeyen had three singles and Colton Webb two singles and two RBI. 

In the second game, EHS was an 8-1 winner. The Hearts ripped out to a 7-1 lead after three innings.

EHS had eight hits led by Spencer Fox and Seachrist with a double each. Fox added an RBI. Jones and Landon Wallace had two singles each.

At St. Anthony

Shelbyville came calling, took the lead in the fifth inning and never relented in an 11-7 victory over Effingham St. Anthony Saturday.

The Bulldogs held a 2-0 first inning lead and led 4-3 in the second and 5-3 in the third. But the Rams tallied four runs in the seventh and went on for the win.

St. Anthony had nine hits but finished with five errors in the contest.

Angelo Mendella had a solo home run while Connor Roepke had a double and an RBI. Eli Levitt had two singles while Colton Fearday and Will Hoene had a single and two RBI each.
