EHS Sweeps, BSE, S. Central Nab Two, Newton Wins In Baseball

Effingham High School swept an Apollo Conference baseball doubleheader over Mattoon Saturday at Evergreen Hollow Park.

Pitching was the name of the doubleheader for the Hearts.

The Hearts' Josh McDevitt didn't allow a run as the Hearts won the opener 10-0. McDevitt went six innings allowing two hits, one walk and striking out 12.

The Hearts tallied two in the second, third and sixth innings and four in the fifth to end the game by the 10-run rule in the sixth.

Gauge Massey led the way offensively with three singles and four RBI. Joe Matteson added two singles and two RBI and John Harper had a single and an RBI.

In the second contest, it was Brayden Pals who had all the right stuff on the mound, allowing just three hits, one walk while racking up 14 strikeouts.

The Hearts ripped out to a 7-0 first inning lead. Harper, Camden Raddatz and Kaiden Nichols all had singles in that inning and Matteson had a triple.

The Hearts finished with seven hits in the contest led by Matteson who had the hot bat on the day for the Hearts. Matteson added two singles and four RBI for a total of four singles and six RBI on the day. Nichols, Harper and Raddatz all had a single and drove in a run each. Quest Hull had two singles.

In junior varsity action Friday, the Hearts grabbed an early lead on their way to a 4-3 victory over Teutopolis.

The Hearts totaled six hits in the game. Ethan Jones and Zach Donaldson had two singles each for the Hearts. Donaldson had two RBI and Jones one. Max Sechrist had a double and an RBI.

Leading T-town was C. Hoene with two singles, Hoelscher with two RBI and Pruemer with a single and an RBI.

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo claimed two victories during Saturday play.

The Bombers downed Red Hill (Bridgeport), 10-4. BSE took the early lead and never let go with a run in the first and four in the third.

BSE banged out 11 hits led by Wyatt Chandler with a single, two doubles and three RBI, Adam Atwood with two singles and a double, Brady Maxey with a single, double and an RBI and Dalton Myers with two singles and two RBI.

In the second game, BSE took a 2-0 opening inning lead against Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City. The Bobcats came back with a run in the second but BSE tacked on single runs in the fourth and sixth for a 4-1 victory.

BSE had six hits led by Myers with a single and double. BSE improved to 5-4 on the season and is back in action Tuesday against Dieterich.

CHBC was led by AJ Radloff with two singles.

At Flora

In a Friday contest in the South Central Wooden Bat Tournament, South Central fell to Flora by a 4-3 count.

The Wolves scored two runs in the fourth before South Central tied in the fifth. Flora then tallied two more in the sixth.

South Central had three hits led by Andrew Magnus with two doubles and Anthony Buonaura with two singles and an RBI.

The Cougars then played two games Saturday. South Central edged North Clay/Clay City, 3-2. South Central held a 2-0 lead in the second. North Clay/Clay City tallied single runs in the sixth and seventh to tie the score. South Central then won with a run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Cougars had seven hits in the contest led by Brandt Hiestand with two singles and Aidan Dodson and Brody Markley with a single and an RBI each.

Spencer Johannes was the pitching winner. He came on the mound in the seventh after a good game by Buonaura through 6.1 innings. Buonaura gave up two runs on five hits, three walks while striking out nine. Johannes came on to throw .2 of an inning striking out one.

South Central then trounced Woodlawn in four innings, 16-0.

The Cougars took a 3-0 opening inning lead then tallied seven in the second and six in the third.

South Central had eight hits led by Hiestand with two singles and three RBI, Brody Markley with two singles, Magnus wih two RBI and Dodson with a double and three RBI.

Beau Jolliff picked up the win on the mound going three innings, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out four.

At Robinson

Newton High School came away with a 16-0 victory over Robinson in Saturday play.

The Eagles took a 3-0 opening inning lead then tacked on four in the second, seven in the third and two in the fifth.

Newton had eight hits led by Isaac Flowers with a single, double and three RBI, Ben Meinhart with two singles, Mason Mulvey with a double and three RBI and Daniel Spiker with a double and an RBI.

Gary Lewis picked up the pitching win, going four innings, allowing two hits, two walks and one strikeout.
