Effingham St. Anthony broke a 2-2 tie with a run in the third and went on for a 12-8 high school baseball victory over Mount Zion Thursday.

The Bulldogs tallied single runs in the first, second and third and three in the fourth but trailed the Braves 8-6 after six innings. St. Anthony then rallied with a six-run seventh to pull out the win.

St. Anthony banged out 14 hits in the contest led by Eli Levitt with a single, two doubles and three RBI while Angelo Mendella added three singles and three RBI and Colton Fearday and Eli Link two singles and two RBI each.

Brock Fearday came on in the sixth inning and held Mount Zion scoreless through the seventh for the win on the mound. He had two strikeouts.

St. Anthony improves to 6-2 on the season. The Bulldogs will be back in action Saturday, weather permitting, hosting three games. The schedule is Tuscola vs. Lanark-Eastland at noon,St. Anthony vs. Lanark-Eastland at 2:30 p.m. and St. Anthony vs. Tuscola at 5 p.m.

At Vandalia

Altamont broke loose with a 14-hit attack and handed Vandalia a 14-6 loss in baseball action Thursday.

The Indians jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning with four runs. Vandalia came back to tie the score in the second and both teams tallied single runs in the third. But Altamont finally cut loose with a five-run fourth and scored two in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Kaidyn Miller had a home run and four RBI while Jared Hammer had a single, two doubles and four RBI and Wyatt Phillips added two singles and three RBI. Mason Robinson and Tyler Robbins had a single and double each, Dillan Elam and Keegan Schultz had a single and an RBI each.

Hammer picked up the pitching win, going four innings, allowing two runs on eight hits, four walks and striking out four.

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo came from behind to tally an 8-7 victory over Pana Thursday.

The Panthers held a 2-0 first inning lead and led 4-1 after four innings. Brownstown/St. Elmo tallied three in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score. Pana moved ahead with two in the sixth and led 7-4 in the seventh. The Bombers came roaring back in the bottom of the final inning to score four runs for the victory.

Brady Maxey picked up the pitching win in relief going 3.2 innings allowing three runs on three hits, three walks and three strikeouts.

Adam Atwood had a walk-off two RBI double for the winners. Dalton Myers and Kevin Hall had two singles and an RBI each. Lukas Miller had a single and two RBI.

Brownstown/St. Elmo improved to 3-1 on the season and returns to action Saturday, weather permitting, against Vandalia at 10 am. and Nokomis at noon.

Newton High School blanked Casey-Westfield by a 10-0 count in six innings Thursday.

The Eagles stepped out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning then scored two in the fourth, one in the fifth and ended the game with three in the sixth.

Owen Mahaffey led the way with three singles and two RBI. Isaac Flowers had a double and drove in three runs while Mason Mulvey added a double and an RBI. Mason Schafer had two singles.

Carder Reich went all six innings allowing no runs on four hits, two walks while striking out seven.
