EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – Several Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville baseball alums are spending their summer playing professional baseball.

Leading the way is pitcher Spencer Patton (2009-11) who currently is in the bullpen for the Texas Rangers. Cole Milam (2019-20) is pitching in the minor leagues in Boston Red Sox system while outfielder Dustin Woodcock (2015-19) is playing for the Gateway Grizzlies of the Frontier League.

Patton, a South Central HIgh School graduate who played with Texas from 2014-15, was re-signed by the Rangers in spring training. He hadn't pitched in the majors since 2016 with the Chicago Cubs. He spent four seasons playing in Japan.

Recalled to the majors on June 9, Patton 0-1 with a 2.20 earned run average in 18 relief appearances with the Rangers. In 16 1/3 innings he has 24 strikeouts and just four walks. Patton has surrendered just 11 hits and sports a 0.92 WHIP.

His next appearance for the Rangers will be Friday against Seattle.

Milam was signed by the Red Sox as an undrafted free agent following the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. He has appeared in 15 games between two Red Sox affiliates. He has no record and a 4.76 combined ERA with one save. He has struck out 21 hitters in 22 2/3 innings. 

Woodcock, who is in his second season with the Grizzlies is hitting .253 and is second on the team with eight home runs. He is tied for the team lead with 29 RBIs.Woodcock GrizzliesWoodcock with the Grizzlies

He has played in 48 games this season, after debuting with the team in 2019. The league did not have a 2020 season. Woodcock has hit 20 home runs and driven in 56 runs over his two seasons for the Grizzlies.
