Cubs Pull Out Win Over Cardinals In Ninth

ST. LOUIS -- With a big ninth inning, the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 7-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals Tuesday at at Busch Stadium

The Cubs had taken a 1-0 lead in the second inning but the Cardinals quickly tied in the third and had a three-run fourth and a two-run sixth to lead 6-1.
Then in the top of the ninth, Patrick Wisdom struck out but the wild pitch allowed Wisdom to reach first. The Cardinals then committed an error on a grounder by Nico Hoerner and Jake Marisnick drew a walk to load the bases. Sergio Alcantara drew a walk and a run came home. Anthony Rizzo followed with another walk and the Cubs had scored two runs to pull within 6-3.

Javier Baez then hit a shot to center that scored two runs and suddenly the Cubs had pulled within 6-5. That brought Ian Happ to the plate. Happ has been struggling and has a .180 batting average but he delivered a double down the right field line and that scored the tying and winning runs. 

The Cubs and Cardinals are tied at third in the National League Central Division. Both are 47-48 on the season and 8 1/2 games back of division-leading Milwaukee.

The Cardinals had three home runs in the contest, all solo shots. Nolan Arenado, Tommy Edman and Jose Rondon produced. Harrison Bader had a single, double and an RBI while Dylan Carlson added a double and an RBI.

 

Tigers' Turnbull To Undergo Tommy John Surgery

The Detroit Tigers announced Tuesday that starting pitcher Spencer Turnbull will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the rest of this season and most or all of the 2022 season.

The 28-year-old, who threw a no-hitter against the Seattle Mariners on May 18, was 4-2 in nine starts.
