The South Central Cougars' 8-0 win over Neoga in baseball action Thursday afternoon was far more significant than the win itself.

The victory marked the 800th in South Central Coach Curt Jones' career at the school and the South Central school district's 1000th win since the establishment of the district. The first season of South Central baseball was in the 1989-1990 school year. That followed the consolidation of the Farina LaGrove and Kinmundy-Alma school districts.

Gary Shirley served as both baseball and boys basketball coach in those early years, and Shirley amassed 199 wins before Jones took over the program for the 1996-1997 school year.

The other win? That was when current South Central High School principal Jamie VanScyoc coached the baseball team for a game.

Speaking of the game, Thursday's contest was dominated by Cougar Chase Dodson, who pitched a four-hit shutout and struck out 13 while homering and going three-for-four at the plate with 3 RBI. Dodson's brother, Aiden, also homered in drove in two runs.
