EHS, St. A Come Back For Wins, Area Baseball Roundup

Effingham High School trailed Neoga until the seventh when the Hearts tallied seven runs to claim an 11-5 baseball win Monday.

The game was tied at 5-5 with EHS batting in the top of the seventh. Jack Blickem singled on the first pitch, scorng two runs. Joe Matteson, Blickem, Kalen Reardon, Preston Latch and Jackson Lee powered the big inning with RBI.

Neoga took an early lead in the second with two runs after the Hearts had scored a run in the top of the frame. The Indians pushed that to 3-1 in the fourth. EHS moved ahead 4-3 in the top of the fifth only to see Neoga come back to take a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth.

Brayden Pals picked up the win going 1.2 innings, allowing three walks and striking out one. Matthew Loy recorded the last out for the save.

EHS collected 14 hits in the game led by Quest Hull and Max Hardiek with a single and double each. Hull drove in two runs. Jackson Lee, Jack Blickem, Max Nelson and Kalen Reardon had two singles each. Lee drove in three runs, Blickem two and Nelson and Reardon one each.

Neoga had only two hits in the contest, singles by A. Fearday and K. Young. Young drove in a run.  N. Lacy and Be. Reynolds had an RBI each.

The Hearts had six errors and gave up seven walks.

In the junior varsity contest, Effingham blanked Neoga, 10-0 in three innings.

The Hearts had nine hits led by S. Fox with a single, double and an RBI, C. Bushue with two singles and an RBI, B .Verdeyen with a single and two RBI and Z. Donaldson with a single and three RBI.

At St. Anthony

Effingham St. Anthony pulled out a 3-2 victory over Mattoon Monday.

The Bulldogs held a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Mattoon came back with a run in the third and tied in the sixth. Both teams went scoreless in the seventh, sending the game into extra innings.

Neither one scored in the eighth. The Bulldogs' Colton Fearday hit a double in the ninth, stole third base and came home with the winning run on a wild pitch. St. Anthony remains unbeaten with a 9-0 record.

St. Anthony had seven hits in the contest led by Eli Moore with a solo home run, Fearday with a single and double and Brody Niebrugge and Will Hoene with two singles each.

Fearday came on the mound in the sixth and went 3.2 innings, allowing one hit, two walks while striking out eight for the win.

At Bethany

Altamont pounded out 10 hits, took advantasge of six walks and three errors in downing Okaw Valley, 8-1 Monday.

The Indians held a 2-1 lead in the second then had a big four-run inning in the fourth and tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth.

Tyler Robbins had quite a day with a triple and three RBI and picking up the win on the mound. Robbins went all seven innings, allowing one run on five hits, no walks while picking up nine strikeouts.

Mason Robinson led the way in hitting with two singles, a triple and two RBI while Brayden Stuemke had three singles and two RBI. Jared Hammer added a double.

At Bethany

Brownstown/St. Elmo came through in the bottom of the seventh to edge Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg, 2-1 Monday.

The Bombers held a 1-0 lead in the second inning. WSS tied in the top of the sixth. BSE came through with the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh.

BSE had six hits led by Wyatt Chandler with a single, double and an RBI and Wyatt Forbes with a single and an RBI. 

Kevin Hall picked up the win on the mound in relief. He went two innings, allowing one run on two hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

The Hatchets had two hits, singles by Austin Wittenberg and Brody Beals.

Brownstown/St. Elmo improves to 4-4 on the season.

At Mulberry Grove

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City took the lead away from Mulberry Grove in the third and never looked back in the 15-7 victory Monday.

Mulberry Grove held a 1-0 lead until the third when CHBC scored three runs, then tallied two in the fourth and had a 10-run sixth.

Carson Evans led the way for CHBC in hitting with two singles, a double and four RBI. Clayton Wojcik had a single, double and an RBI and Wes Radloff a single and three RBI.

Mason Manley was the winning pitcher, going 2.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

South Central pounded out 15 hits and scored 18 runs in an 18-1 victory over Ramsey in five innings via the 10-run rule Monday.

The Cougars held a 4-0 opening inning lead then tacked on five in the second, three in the third and six in the fifth.

S. Cowger had a single, double and four RBI while S. Rubin and B. Jolliff had a single, double and two RBI each. H. Cripe added two singles and an RBI. C. Thompson had a single and drove in two runs.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City trailed Mulberry Grove until the third inning then went on a tear and claimed a 15-7 victory Monday.

Mulberry Grove led 1-0 until CHBC scored three n the third, two in the fourth and 10 in the sixth.
