Cards Kick Off Season

(Phoenix, AZ) -- The Cardinals begin the 2013 MLB season on the road against the Diamondbacks. Adam Wainwright takes the hill for St. Louis opposite Ian Kennedy. The two teams continue their three-game series Tuesday and Wednesday before the Cards head to San Francisco to play the Giants Friday.

Cubs Take On Pirates

(Pittsburgh, PA) -- The Cubs start the 2013 season this afternoon in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. Chicago will send right-hander Jeff Samardzija to the hill opposite veteran A.J. Burnett. Samardzija went 9-13 with a 3.81 ERA last season in 28 starts. First pitch is slated for 12:35 this afternoon.

The Cubs will be without second baseman Darwin Barney when the season starts today. The "Chicago Sun-Times" reports Barney will miss the contest against the Pirates with a laceration on his left knee.  The injury was sustained in Saturday's exhibition in Houston and required five stitches. The report indicates he could hit the disabled list.

White Sox Host Royals In Opener

(Chicago, IL) -- The White Sox welcome the Kansas City Royals to U.S. Cellular Field for the 2013 opener this afternoon. Chicago will send left-hander Chris Sale to the hill opposite newly-acquired KC righty James Shields.  Sale was 17-8 with a 3.05 ERA last season in 29 starts.  First pitch is set for 3:10 this afternoon.

Astros Take MLB Opener From Rangers

(Houston, TX) -- The Houston Astros kicked off the 2013 Major League Baseball season with an 8-2 win over the Texas Rangers. It was Houston's first game in the American League West after moving over from the National League West for this season. Rick Ankiel delivered a pinch-hit three-run homer in the sixth for Houston, which posted an MLB-worst 107 losses last season.

Johan Santana To Undergo Season-Ending Surgery

(Flushing, NY) -- New York Mets pitcher Johan Santana will once again go under the knife in order to repair a torn anterior capsule in his pitching shoulder. The season-ending procedure will be Santana's second in less than three years. He is in the last year of a six-year, $137.5-million contract. The two-time Cy Young Award winner will undergo surgery Tuesday.
