Suffering a 12-3 defeat at the hands of Kansas City Wednesday, the Cardinals not only lost the game but lost pitcher Carlos Martinez.
Martinez went five innings, giving up nine hits, two walks and striking out three. But on his final pitch, he fell off the mound and had to exit the contest after he grabbed his left side suffering a mid-back strain.
The loss of both the contest and Martinez left the Cardinals at 7-6 on their longest road trip of the season.
Kansas City finished with 14 hits that included four doubles, a triple and a home run.
Pittsburgh 2, Chicago 1
Kyle Hendricks had a rough first inning, settled to go 7.2 innings allowing seven hits, one walk and three strikeouts. However the damage was done and the Chicago Cubs couldn't get on track offensively to help out in the loss to PIttsburgh, 2-1.
Hendricks gave up back-to-back home runs to Adam Frazier and Ke'Bryan Hayes. That was after the Cubs scored their lone score on a solo shot by Anthony Rizzo to give Hendricks the lead in the top of the first.
But the Pirates came back to move ahead 2-1 and that's where the scoring ended for the game.
Rays Win AL East Title
The Tampa Bay Rays won the American League East title Wednesday night for the first time in 10 years with an 8-5 win over the New York Mets. The Rays also won the AL East in 2008 and 2010.
