Giolito struck out 13 batters, and fell short of a perfect game only with a fourth-inning walk. Normally, the home-field fans in Chicago would have been wildly cheering, but instead Giolito's no-hitter came before empty stands and was celebrated only by teammates.
At St. Louis
St. Louis dropped a 5-4 decision to Kansas City at Busch Stadium Tuesday.
A close play that would have tied the game came in the eighth. Yadier Molina hit a ball that went off the left centerfield wall and Paul DeJong headed for home with the tying run for the Cardinals.
But Whit Merrfield got to the ball, nailed the cutoff, Adalberto Mondesi who then turned and threw home getting DeJong out at the plate.
St. Louis held a 4-2 lead going into the fifth. Kansas City tallied a run and tied the score in the sixth. The Royals moved ahead with a run in the eighth.
The Cardinals had eight hits in the game
At Detroit
Detroit took a 2-0 opening inning lead and went on to down the Chicago Cubs, 7-1.
The Tigers had a 10-hit attack as the Cubs threw six pitchers. Tyler Chatwood was the starter but only went 1.1 innings allowing three hits, two runs, issued five walks and had two strikeouts.
Effingham's Danny Winkler went one inning allowing one hit.
Willson Contreras was the lone highlight on the day with a solo homer in the ninth. Jason Heyward produced a triple.
