The St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs split a Wednesday doubleheader, with each team winning the game in which they were the visiting team.
It was all possible due to the COVID cancellation of games scheduled earlier this season in St. Louis. The teams played doubleheaders both Monday and Wednesday with a single game on Tuesday, making for a rare five-game series.
The Cardinals won the opener 9-3. A Matt Carpenter grand slam staked the Redbirds to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. The Cubs got home runs from Ian Happ and Josh Phegley to account for all three of their runs.
Kolten Wong had a big game for St. Louis, scoring four times. Tyler Webb got the win in relief of Jack Flaherty.
In the nightcap, Adbert Alzolay gave up one unearned run in five innings of work in his first start of the season for the Cubs. Jeremy Jeffress allowed the tying run to score in the sixth, but David Bote's two-run single put the Cubs back up 4-2 in the top of the seventh and Craig Kimbrel struck out the side in the bottom of the seventh to post his first save of the season. Andrew Miller took the loss in relief for the Cardinals.
The Cubs ended up winning three of five games in the series. Chicago has the day off, while the Cardinals are home to Cincinnati tonight at 7:15pm.
