Happ reached base four times with a single, two walks and a solo homer. Filling in for Kris Bryant, Happ went through 23 pitches and did what he had to do in a 6-3 Cubs win over the St. Louis Cardinals.
Both teams had nine hits. Kyle Schwarber sent one long in the fifth with one on while Jason Heyward had a single, triple and an RBI, Javier Baez a double and Victor Caratini a double and an RBI for the Cubs.
Meanwhile, the Cardinals were led by Matt Carpenter with a single, double and an RBI, Kolten Wong with two singles and Paul Goldschmidt with three singles and an RBI.
The Cubs held the lead from the beginning with a run in the third. Yu Darvish went six innings to improve to 4-1. He gave up eight hits, one walk and struck out seven. Effingham's Dan Winkler went 0.2 allowing one hit and walking one.
Kenta Maeda Within Three Outs Of No-HItter
Minnesota Twins pitcher Kenta Maeda came within three outs of a no-hitter against the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night, giving up a single to start the ninth inning to Eric Sogard.
Maeda threw a Twins record eight consecutive strikeouts and a total of 12 during the attempt. He was taken out of the game after giving up the hit and the Twins blew a 3-0 lead, but they came back to win in the 12th inning 4-3.
Rangers' Gibaut, Woodward Suspended
Texas Rangers pitcher Ian Gibaut was suspended Tuesday for three games for throwing a fastball behind the San Diego Padres’ Manny Machado and manager Chris Woodward was suspended for one game.
Gibaut threw behind Machado after the Padres’ Fernando Tatis Jr.. hit a grand slam on a 3-0 pitch against previous Rangers pitcher Juan Nicasio with San Diego leading by seven runs in the eighth inning, breaking an unwritten baseball rule against running up the score.
Reds, Royals Game Postponed
The Cincinnati Reds and Kansas City Royals are set to play a doubleheader today after their game Tuesday night was postponed so that the Reds could do more coronavirus testing after a player tested positive over the weekend.
After the positive test, the last two games of a Reds series against Pittsburgh was postponed.
