The Cardinals pounced on Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks in the seventh inning of game one. Hendricks held the Cardinals for six innings but in the seventh, Paul Goldschmidt doubled to lead off the frame. Hendricks then walked Tyler O'Neill. Matt Carpenter singled to load the bases.
Dylan Carlson hit into a fielder's choice and Cubs' Rowan Wick came on in relief. Brad Miller came up and hit a two-run double to left-center and the Cardinals pulled out a 3-1 victory.
In the second game, the Cubs pulled out a 5-4 victory. St. Louis held a 4-1 lead going into the seventh when the Cubs brought home four runs for the victory. The highlight was a three-run homer by David Bote into centerfield.
Willson Contreras' RBI double started the rumble and was the Cubs' first hit of the game.
The two teams meet today in a 7:15 contest before finishing out the series Wednesday with another doubleheader beginning at 1:20.
