Former Chicago Cubs' Nick Castellanos guided the Cincinnati Reds to a 12-7 victory Wednesday at Great American Ball Park.
Castellanos proved to be the enemy this time around with a grand slam in the fifth inning off Rex Brothers. The Reds had led 2-0 in the fourth then had a seven-run fifth and led 9-0 until the seventh.
The Cubs finally got on track, scoring five runs in the seventh but the Reds came right back in the bottom of the frame to tally three more. The Cubs finished out with two in the top of the ninth.
Cubs' starter Kyle Hendricks wasn't as sharp against the Reds. He started the two-run fourth off allowing a leadoff walk and gave up a two-run homer to Mike Moustakas. He exited in the fifth after allowing four batters on base and giving up a two-run single.
But Brothers came on and gave up the grand slam.
The Cubs had seven hits led by David Bote with a two-run homer, Kris Bryant with a double and two RBI, Ian Happ with a double and Nico Hoerner with two singles and two RBI.
Minnesota 3, St. Louis 0
The St. Louis Cardinals continued to falter in the early going with a second loss to Minnesota Wednesday, 3-0 at Target Field. That drops St. Louis into third place in the NL Central with a 2-3 record.
The Cardinals managed only three hits and never had a runner make it to second base. Twins pitchers retired 10 Cardinals straight. Yaier Molina had a single in the second and the Cardinals didn't strike again until Dexter Fowler's single in the eighth.
Meanwhile, Daniel Ponce de Leon only went 3.2 innings, allowing two hits, three runs, three walks but he did strike out eight. After that four more pitchers gave up another eight hits and seven runs.
With a day off Thursday, the Cardinals will head to Milwaukee to face the Brewers in a three-game weekend series.
