CINCINNATI -- Javier Baez launched two home runs as the Chicago Cubs handed Cincinnati an 8-5 loss to pick up another victory Tuesday.
Baez finished the game with a double, two home runs and three RBI. Along with that, Baez scored on a slide and made a defensive play that was difficult, but he made it look easy.
With the win, the Cubs are ahead in the National League Central division with a 4-1 record.
The Cubs edged out to a 1-0 lead in the third inning and scored single runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings for a 6-3 lead. The Cubs finished out with two in the ninth for the 8-5 victory behind a 12-hit attack.
David Bote contributed a single, home run and an RBI.
Alec Mills picked up his first win of the season on the mound by going six innings, allowing two hits, two walks and striking out three.
At Minnesota
Minnesota thumped St. Louis starter Carlos Martinez to take a 6-3 win in action at Target Field Tuesday.
Martinez went 3 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. After two years in the bullpen, Martinez joined the starting rotation this year after impressing the Cardinals during Summer Camp. But the hard-hitting Twins didn't give him a chance for victory. They jumped on him for five runs in the second inning.
Tommy Edman had a double, home run and an RBI while Tyler O'Neill contributed a home run and two RBI.
The Cardinals, standing in second place in the NL Central, drop to 2-2 on the season.
