Cubs Beat Brewers, Cardinals Fall To Pirates

CHICAGO -- Willson Contreras' summer camp experience came through Sunday as the Chicago Cubs defeated MIlwaukee, 9-1 behind an 11-hit attack.

 

Contreras' contributed two power hits, a double and a solo homer against Bobby Wahl in the seventh inning that went 451 feet. Contreras had notched four homers in intrasquad games and nailed two home runs against the Minnesota Twins in an exhibition contest.

Along with Contreras, Ian Happ knocked out a single and a two-run shot. He finished with three RBI. Nico Hoerner had a single, double and an RBI while Kyle Schwarber contributed a double. Anthony Rizzo came up big with a solo shot in the eighth.

The Cubs edged out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning, then had a four-run fourth, tallied another single run in the seventh and finished out with three in the eighth.

MIlwaukee had three hits off winning pitcher Tyler Chatwood. Chatwood went six innings, allowing one run, two walks and striking out eight.

 

At St. Louis

Although St. Louis took a lead in the third inning, that went by the wayside in the next inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates went on for a 5-1 victory Sunday at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals held a 1-0 lead in the third inning, but that was the lone run they were to score.

Pittsburgh tallied three in the fourth and single runs in the fifth and eighth. The Pirates jumped on Dakota Hudson when he got two pitches up for two home runs.

The Cardinals had five hits led by Paul DeJong with a double. Tommy Edman, Paul Godlschmidt, Yadier Molina and Kolten Wong had a single each.
