PROVIDENCE, R.I. - University of Louisville junior outfielder Adam Engel was named BIG EAST Baseball Player of the Week on Monday after his impressive performances in the Cardinals’ four wins last week.
Engel had a terrific week hitting .400 (6-for-15) at the plate with two doubles, a triple, five RBI, six runs scored and eight stolen bases in eight attempts as the No. 4 Cardinals went 4-0 on the week. In Sunday’s series finale against Akron, Engel matched a school record and became just the fifth Louisville player in school history to steal four bases in a game.
Earlier in the week, Engel was 3-for-5 with four RBI, three runs scored and three stolen bases in the Cards’ 17-6 win over Eastern Kentucky. On the season, Engel is hitting .357 with a team-leading eight RBI and is 10-for-10 on stolen bases.
Monday marked the second straight week Louisville has earned one of the league’s major weekly awards as junior righty Jeff Thompson was selected as BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week last week. Also on Monday, junior right-hander Chad Green (Effingham, Ill./Effingham HS) was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll after allowing only one hit in a career best seven shutout innings to earn the victory in the Cardinals’ series-opening win over Akron last Friday.
Up next, Louisville will continue its eight-game homestand with a midweek matchup against Morehead State on Tuesday at 3 p.m., ET at Jim Patterson Stadium. That will be followed by a weekend series on March 1-3 against 2012 College World Series participant Kent State. Admission is free for all four games.
