Pete Rose asked Major League Baseball Wednesday to end his lifetime ban, saying the punishment is unfair compared with what's been given for steroids and the recent sign stealing scandal, which had been limited suspensions of months or a year.

Rose received the ban in 1989 after an investigation found he'd placed bets on the Cincinnati Reds to win from 1985 to 1987 while playing for and managing the team. The petition says that there was never any claim that Rose's misconduct was meant to get a competitive advantage over other teams, but that wasn't true of the steroids and sign stealing scandals.
