The Chicago Cubs, restructuring their bullpen, Friday signed free agent righthander Dan Winkler.

Winkler, an Effingham native, is a graduate of St. Anthony High School. He received a one-year major league contract from the Cubs. His pact is a split contract that will include a $750,000 base salary at the big league level.

Winkler, who will turn 30 in February, is coming off a rough 2019 season in which he posted a 4.98 ERA in 27 games with the Braves before finishing the year in Triple-A in the Giants' system. One year earlier, though, the righthander put together a 3.43 ERA with 69 strikeouts against 20 walks in 60-1/3 innings over 69 games for Atlanta while holding righties to a .193 average.
