Cardinals fall to D-backs In 19 Innings

PHOENIX -- Nineteen innings . . . that's how long the game went before Arizona's Ildmaro Vargas hit an RBI single amd the Diamondbacks handed St. Louis a 3-2 walk-off loss.
The game went six hours and 53 minutes and finally finished out around 3 a.m. A Major League record-tying 48 strikeouts were compiled by the Cardinals and Diamondbacks. St. Louis used 11 pitchers.
Paul Goldschmidt homered to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead in the 13th but the Diamondbacks came back to knot the score in the bottom of the frame.
Dexter Fowler homered in the fourth for St. Louis. Vargas hit the game-tying homer in the ninth.
St. Louis ended up using 24 players in the game.
Nationals Clinch At Least Wild Card
The Washington Nationals clinched at least a wild card berth with their doubleheader sweep of Philadelphia Tuesday. The sweep also eliminated the Phillies from the playoffs.
Indians' Ramirez Returns
The Cleveland Indians’ José Ramirez returned Tuesday night after a month on the injured list with a broken hand and hit a grand slam in his first plate appearance. Ramirez followed it up with a three-run shot and had seven RBIs on the night.
Oakland's Trivino Will Miss Rest of Season
The Oakland Athletics say reliever Lou Trivino will miss the rest of the regular season and likely the playoffs, if the team makes it to the postseason. Trivino cracked a rib when he fell in the shower at his home last week.
MLB Sets Strikeout Record
With all the talk about home runs, Major League Baseball has set a season strikeout record for the 12th straight year. During last night’s games, the previous season strikeout record of 41,207 was broken.
