Effingham St. Anthony had a big second inning and handed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg an 8-3 loss as two National Trail Conference teams met Tuesday. The game was heard on 979 XFM.
The Hatchets rumbled in the top of the first, putting a runner on base as Austin Wittenberg led off with a single. But a fielder's choice and Kaden Fearday getting tough on the mound with two strikeouts ended the inning.
The Bulldogs went up and down in the first but came back to break loose with four runs in the second. Davis Tingley led off the inning with a grounder that went to short and the long throw pulled the first baseman off the bag. From there, Aaron Webb reached on an error when Gavan Wernsing came off the mound and couldn't get a handle on the ball. With two on, Logan Antrim followed with a soft single that had a slow roll to short and the throw couldn't get to first on time to load the bases.
Gavin Braunecker then hit a sacrifice fly that scored a run. Eli Moore drew a walk to re-load the bases. With two outs, Kennan Walsh slammed a triple to right field that cleared the bases. WSS got out of the inning on a ground out.
The Hatchets got a runner on base in the third on an error and he went to second, but the Bulldogs got out of the frame.
Then in the fourth, St. Anthony tallied another run as Antrim singled, stole second and third and came home on an error on the throw attempting to get him stealing third.
A final run for the Bulldogs came in the fifth. Jack Hoene reached on a single but was thrown out attempting to steal. Fearday followed with a single. Tingley picked up his second single and Webb knocked a single to right field that scored Fearday.
The Hatchets had a runner on in the fifth when Rhett Rincker doubled but he was left stranded as Fearday came up with a strikeout to end the inning. Then in the sixth, WSS put Jordan Wittenberg on with a single but the Bulldogs got out of the frame by turning a double play.
Fearday finished a complete game, allowing three hits, one walk and striking out six. Wernsing picked up the loss, going six innings allowing eight hits, one walk and striking out four.
