North Clay Edges Shoes For Wooden Bat Title

TEUTOPOLIS -- North Clay High School claimed the championship of the Teutopolis Wooden Bat Baseball Tournament Saturday.
The Wooden Shoes won the opener over Effingham St. Anthony, 5-4. T-town scored all five runs in the first inning. The Bulldogs came back with two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth.
St. Anthony outhit the Shoes 9-6. K. Fearday led the way with a single, two doubles and an RBI while A.Mendella had a single, double and two RBI.
Teutopolis was led by M. Hemmen with a double and two RBI.
In the second contest, North Clay (Louisville) downed Dieterich, 7-5.
North Clay had a five-run third then tallied single runs in the fourth and fifth. Dieterich came back with a run in the sixth and scored four in the bottom of the seventh only to fall short.
Jones led North Clay with a single and two doubles while McCrary had three singles and an RBI, Ingram, a single, double and three RBI and Clifton two singles and two RBI.
Dieterich was led by Britton with a single and double and Will with two singles and an RBI.
In the third place contest, St. Anthony handed Dieterich a 12-2 loss in five innings via the 10-run rule.
The Bulldogs led 4-2 after three then had a five-run fourth and tallied three in the fifth to end the game.
Webb had a single, double and three RBI for the Bulldogs while C. Fearday and Moore had three singles and an RBI each. Antrim chpped in with two singles and two RBI.
Dieterich was led by Niebrugge with a double.
In the championship, North Clay and T-town went 12 innings before the Cardinals pulled out a 9-8 victory.
North Clay led 1-0 after the first inning and 3-0 after the second. T-town moved ahead 4-3 in the top of the fourth but North Clay tied in the bottom of the frame. T-town took an 8-7 lead in the sixth but the Cardnials tied in the bottom of the seventh sending the game into extra innings.
The contest went through five more innings before North Clay's Harmon Clifton doubled in the 12th and scored on a passed ball.
Clifton finished with a single, two doubles and an RBI while T. Jones, E. McCrary and D. Zimmerman had two singles each. Jones and Zimmerman had an RBI each.
T-town was led by Schwerdt with a single, double and an RBI.

Effingham St. Anthony downed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 5-2. CHBC held a 2-1 first inning lead but the Bulldogs tallied three in the second and a final run in the fifth.
B. Niebrugge went five innings allowing two runs on one hit, three walks and striking out nine.
A. Webb had a double and an RBI while J. Hoene had a single and four RBI.
South Central's one hit came from Q. Schlanser with a single.

South Central stepped out to a 7-3 opening inning lead on Altamont and went on for a 13-9 victory.
The Cougars had nine hits led by C. Dodson with two singles, a double and three RBI while S. Cowger had a double and two RBI and E. Watwood two singles and an RBI. South Central improves to 2-0 in the National Trail Confrence, 3-0 overall.
Altamont was led by H. Cripe with three singles and four RBI and B. Baucum with a double and an RBI.

Saturday Games
Altamont picked up a varsity and a junior varsity victory over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.
Altamont tallied a 2-1 varsity win. WSS held a 1-0 lead until the third when the Indians knotted the score. Altamont then tallied the winning run in the top of the seventh. M. Robinson led off the inning with a pinch-hit single. B. Stuemke followed with a single and K. Eirhart singled home the winning run. Eirhart had both RBI in the game.
Stuemke threw a two-hitter with no walks and six strikeouts.
The Hatchets wre led by G. Wernsing and S. Vonderheide with a single each.
In junior varsity action, Altamont picked up a 10-3 victory behind a 12-hit attack.
Cripe had a double and an RBI while Robinson, Kollman and Cornett had two singles each. Kollman drove in two runs and Robinson one.
WSS had four hits, all singles by Beals, Welton, Chaney and Slifer. Beals had one RBI.

Woodlawn held a 2-1 lead after six innings. The score was tied at 4-4 in the seventh sending the game into extra innings. Both teams scored a single run in the 10th. South Central then broke loose with five runs in the 11th.
