MLB's Trading Deadline Ended With Big Deals, Cubs Beat Cardinals

Wednesday was Major League Baseball’s trading deadline and the big blockbuster deal had the Arizona Diamondbacks sending former Cy Young winner Zack Greinke to the Houston Astros in a deal that establishes them as World Series favorites. In return, the D-Backs get the Astros’ five top prospects. In a separate deal, Martin Maldonado was traded a second time this month as the Astros sent him to the Cubs for fielder Tony Kemp.

In other baseball trade deadline moves . . . The Athletics picked up pitcher Tanner Roark from the Reds . . . The Phillies acquired outfielder Corey Dickerson from the Pirates . . . The Braves purchased catcher John Ryan Murphy from the Diamondbacks . . .

The Tigers sent right fielder Nicholas Castellanos to the Cubs and closer Shane Greene to the Braves while the Cubs also acquired pitcher Brad Wieck from the Padres for pitcher Carl Edwards Jr. . . . the Giants sent former closer Mark Melancon to the Braves for reliever Daniel Winkler and shipped reliever Sam Dyson to the Twins and Drew Pomeranz and Ray Black to the Brewers . . .

The Nationals acquired relievers Daniel Hudson from the Blue Jays and Hunter Strickland and Roenis Elias from the Mariners . . . the Dodgers got pitcher Adam Kolarek from the Rays and infielder Jedd Gyorko from the Cardinals for pitcher Tony Cingrani.

 

Hendricks, Cubs Beat Cardinals, 2-0

ST. LOUIS -- Kyle Hendricks just has the St. Louis Cardinals number.

Hendricks went seven innings for a shutout as the Cubs came back from the 2-1 loss Tuesday to pick up a 2-0 win over the Cardinals Wednesday.

The two teams are now tied atop the National League Central. Hendricks claimed his third victory over the Cardinals this year and his 11th consecutive. He has a 0.39 ERA against the Cardinals.

The game went through five scoreless innings before the Cubs struck in the sixth with a run and finished out with one in the eighth. Chicago had eight hits led by Jason Heyward and Wilson Contreras with two each. Heyward had a single and double and Contreras two singles. Javier Baez had a double. Ian Happ singled in a run.

The Cardinals outhit the Cubs 9-8. Paul Goldschmidt had a single and double while Kolten Wong had two singles.
