Shoes Advance To 1A State Title Contest

PEORIA -- Teutopolis took the early lead then came back in the later innings to put the game away with a 7-2 victory over Rock Island Alleman at Dozer Park in the Class 2A State Baseball Tournament Friday.

The Wooden Shoes took a 1-0 first inning lead as Dawson Smith led off with a single then stole second. With two outs, Clint Weber singled home Smith,

Then in the second, the Shoes struck again. With one out, Brady McMahon singled and stole second. Smith followed with his second single. McMahon came home on an error by the catcher.

Alleman struck in the third with a run and tied the game in the top of the fourth. But the Shoes quickly regained the lead in the bottom of the frame. Tyler Runde led off with a single and was sacrificed over by McMahon. Justin Hardiek singled home Runde for a 3-2 Wooden Shoes lead.

T-town then tallied two runs in the fifth and two in the sixth. Weber led off with a single and continued the aggressiveness on the bases with a steal. Mitch Hardiek reached on an error. Weber came home on a wild pitch while Hardiek crossed the plate when Runde hit a sacrifice fly ball to right field.

In the sixth, Smith reached on an error. With two outs, Trenton Schwerdt drew a walk. Weber then singled followed by a double by Hardiek scoring a run.

The Shoes finished with 12 hits and was aided by three Alleman errors. T-town had four steals and took advantage of three wild pitches and two walks.

Smith took the pitching win, going six innings allowing two runs on three hits, five walks and striking out 10.

Pleasant Plains defeated Aurora Christian 6-3 in the opener.

T-town and Pleasant Plains advanced to the state championship Saturday while Aurora Christian and Rock Island Alleman squared off for third place.
