Altamont Falls In Baseball Super-Sectional

Altamont High School's outstanding baseball post-season run came to a close at the Class 1A Carbondale Super-Sectional Monday with an 11-7 loss to Steeleville.

The Indians struggled during most of the season, coming into post-season play with an 11-14-1 record. But Altamont caught fire, winning the St. Anthony Regional by downing Casey-Westfield and host St. Anthony and taking the Dieterich Sectional with wins over South Central and North Clay.

The squad outhit Steeleville 12-10 but committed three errors. Steeleville took the early lead, going out to 3-0 in the second and pushing that to 5-0 in the third. Altamont started to come back with two runs in the top of the fourth, however Steeleville tallied three more in the bottom of the frame to lead 8-2.

The Indians then pulled wthin 8-7 in the fifth with five runs. But Steeleville put the game away with a three-run sixth.

Jacob Hammer led the way for Altamont with a double, home run and three RBI. Jacob Robbins added three singles and an RBI while Dakota Kuhlman had two singles. Braidin Baucum had a single and drove in two runs. Kaden Eirhart added a single and an RBI.

The Indians finish the season with a 15-15-1 record. Steeleville advances to the Class 1A State Tournament this Friday and Saturday. In Friday action, Steeleville meets Wateroo Gibault Catholic at noon. Ottawa Marquette takes on Elgin Harvest Christian Academy at 10 a.m. The winners advance to the state championship game Saturday at 11 a.m. while the losers square off for third place at 9 a.m.
