Altamont, North Clay, T-town Move To Title Games

DIETERICH -- Altamont and North Clay (Louisville) came out winners at the Class 1A Dieterich Baseball Sectional Wednesday.

The pair will now square off for the championship Saturday at 11 a.m. The winner will head to the Carbondale Super-Sectional Monday at 1 p.m.

Altamont handed National Trail Conference foe South Central a 7-2 loss Wednesday. The Indians and Cougars were tied at 1-1 in the first inning. The Indians' Dakota Kuhlman led off the frame with a single. With one out Jacob Robbins singled. Kuhlman ended up scoring on a passed ball.

The Cougars' Chase Dodson doubled to start the first and came around to score, tying the game.

Altamont tallied in the second. With two outs, Kaden Eirhardt singled. Kuhlman followed with a single and Alek Biggs singled home Eirhardt.

South Central tied in the third on a solo shot by DJ Roberts.

But that was the last gasp for the Cougars as Altamont tallied three in the fifth and two in the sixth. The fifth inning, saw Robbins double in Biggs and Jacob Hammer doubled in a run. Bradin Baucum added a single.

The two runs n the sixth were on an error, passed ball, double by Biggs and a single by Robbins.

Altamont had 10 hits led by Robbins and Hammer with a single and double each. Hammer drove in two runs while Robbins had one RBI. Biggs and Kuhlman had two singles each. Biggs had two RBI.

South Central was led by Roberts with his solo homer and Dodson with a double.

North Clay trailed Nokomis 4-0 until the fifth inning. The Cardinals came to life with a three-run inning that included a single by Peyton Koelm, a walk to Tyson Jones and a three-run homer by Harmon Clifton.

The Cardinals then came up big dramatically in the seventh. Trailing 4-3, Eli McCrary reached on an error and Collyn Ballard came in to pinch run. With one out, Aleon Rinehart drew a walk. Jones was then hit by a pitch to load the bases. Ballard was attempting to steal home when Briar Repking hit the ball with Ballard just feet from the swinging bat. Repking had a walk-off single that drove in both runners.

Then in the bottom of the seventh, Nokomis put two runners on base. With one out, Drew Masset singled and stole second. With two outs, Carter Sabol drew a walk but the final out came on a fly ball.

Luke Fleener was the winning pitcher, going all seven innings allowing four runs on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts.

Class 2A Teutopolis Sectional

Teutopolis is owning its own sectional after bouncing Gillespie, 10-5 behind a 15-hit attack Wednesday.

The Wooden Shoes held a 3-0 first inning lead. Gillespie pulled within 3-2 in the second. T-town then pushed its lead to 5-2 in the third. Gillespie came back within 5-3 in the fourth. T-town then put the game on ice with a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Of the 15 hits, eight were for extra bases. Mitch Hemmen had a big game at bat with a single, two doubles, a home run and two RBI. Luke Ungrund also went on a tear at the plate with two singles, two doubles and an RBI. Clint Weber had a home run and two RBI, Mitch Hardiek a triple, Dawson Smith a double and Tyler Runde three singles and an RBI.

Hemmen pushed his pitching record to 6-0 on the season, going six innings, allowing seven hits, five runs, one walk and striking out six.

T-town improved to 24-8-1 while Gillespie saw its season come to a close with a 15-12 record.

Breese Mater Dei won the second game by downing Robinson, 6-4. Mater Dei and T-town will square off for the championship at 10 a.m. Saturday with the winner advancing to the Sauget Super-Sectional Monday at 5 p.m.
