EHS Wins Regular Season, Area Baseball Regional Roundup

MATTOON -- Effingham High School claimed the second half of an Apollo Conference baseball doubleheader over Mattoon Thursday, 8-5. The second game was rained out last Saturday.
The two teams were tied at 1-1 after the first. The Hearts then moved ahead 4-1 in the third and led 5-2 in the fifth. EHS then tallied three more in the sixth. The Green Wave mounted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh only to fall short.
EHS had eight hits led by Brayton Poland with a single, double and two RBI, Tanner Gordon with two singles and an RBI. Jackson Lee with a single and two RBI.
Austin Waldhoff was the winning pitcher, going 3.1 innings, allowing one hit, two runs, three walks and four strikeouts.
EHS will be back in action Saturday with an 11 a.m. contest at Centralia before heading into regional play at Paris Wednesday.

Class 1A Oblong Regional
Dieterich moved into the championship game of the Class 1A Oblong Regional with a victory Thursday.
The Movin' Maroons blanked Hutsonville/Palestine, 10-0 in six innings. Dieterich held a 2-0 first inning lead and a 5-0 lead in the second.
Matthew Hunzinger picked up the win on the mound, going four innings, allowing one hit, five walks and striking out nine. Dalton Will went the final two innings, allowng no hits, one walk and striking out three.
Will had a single, double and two RBI while Derek Kuhl had two singles, a double and an RBI. Cole Niebrugge and Hunzinger had a double each. Niebrugge added two RBI. Blake Lane had a single and three RBI.
Dieterich will now face South Central for the regional championship at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Class 1A Nokomis Regional
Nokomis ended Brownstown/St. Elmo's season by picking up a 4-1 win Thursday.
Nokomis scored all four of its runs in the first inning. SEB tallied its lone run in the second.
BSE outhit Nokomis, 4-1 but committed four errors. Nate Philpot garnered the tough-luck loss on the mound, going 5.1 innings, allowing thee hits, three walks and striking out 12. He tied the school record of 104 strikeouts in a season that was set by Logan Mahon in the spring of 2006.
Philpot, Caleb Atwood, Dalton Myers and David Stine had a single each for SEB who ends the season with a 14-12 record.
Nokomis advances to face Cumberland Saturday at 1 p.m. for the regional title.

Class 2A Newton Regional
Newton will be playing for the championship of its own regional after downing Flora, 10-2 Thursday.
The Eagles stepped out to a 2-0 first inning lead then had four-run innings in the third and sixth.
Newton had some power at the plate with three home runs. Jake Rice had two singles, a home run and drove in four while Chase Galloway had a single, home run and four RBI and Zach Stark a solo shot. Aaron Einhorn added two singles.
Stark was the winning pitcher going 5.2 innings, allowing two runs on five hits, four walks and six strikeouts.

Greenville picked up a 13-5 win over HIllsboro in its own regional Thursday.
Greenville will now face Teutopolis at 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional championship.
