Teutopolis Defeats Effingham 6-2 Monday

The Teutopolis Wooden Shoes downed the Effingham Flaming Hearts 6-2 Monday in high school baseball. The game was heard on 979XFM and www.979xfm.com.
Teutopolis got on the board in the second inning.
Mitch Hemmen walked to lead off the inning. Hemmen stole second base and then scored on a RBI single by Justin Hardiek.
The Hearts tied the game in the fourth.
Tanner Gordon singled to lead off the inning and Cooper Jackson followed with a base hit. Brayton Poland then reached on a fielder's choice and Gordon scored on a passed ball to make the game 1-1.
Teutopolis bounced right back, though, with three runs in the fifth.
Justin Hardiek singled to lead off the inning and stole second. Luke Ungrund then tripled Hardiek home to make it 2-1 Shoes and then Trenton Schwerdt singled to scored Ungrund. Schwerdt scored on an error to make it 4-1.
The Shoes tacked on two more runs in the seventh.
Ungrund walked to lead off the inning and Clint Weber doubled him home. Hemmen then drove in Weber.
The Hearts attempted a seventh inning rally, loading the bases with just one out. They plated one run when Colin Fielitz singled home Brayton Poland, but that's where the rally ended.
Mitch Hemmen went the distance for Teutopolis, allowing just one earned run on six hit. Hemmen walked just one and fanned 10.
Matthew Loy took the loss for the Hearts, allowing three runs in 4-1/3 innings of work. Nick Bishop pitched the final 2-2/3 innings and allowed the other four runs. Bishop had six strikeouts.
Teutopolis improved to 17-5 on the spring, while Effingham slipped to 15-4.
