Fleener Gets 500th Career Win, Altamont, C'land Nab Victories

TEUTOPOLIS -- Charleston took the early 3-1 lead but Teutopolis came back with a five-run fourth and produced a 9-6 victory to give Coach Justin Fleener his 500th career coaching win Monday in high school baseball.

Fleener, in his 19th year of coaching at Teutopolis, has a 500-116 record. During his tenure, the Shoes have won three state championships, taken second once and third three times.

The Shoes had 13 hits in the contest led by Mitch Hemmen with a single and a solo home run. Evan Wermert added a single, double and an RBI while Trenton Schwerdt had two singles and three RBI, Luke Ungrund two singles and two RBI and Justin Hardiek three singles.

Clint Weber went four innings allowing seven hits, six runs, two walks and striking out six to improve to 3-0 on the season. Brock Deters went two innings allowing one hit and striking out three while Schwerdt finished out for a save, going one inning with two strikeouts to improve to 4-1-1.

The Shoes are now 11-5 while Charleston dropped to 11-5.

T-town will be back in action today playing host to Effingham St. Anthony at 4:30. The game will be on the radio at 97.9 XFM.

Altamont ended this game in the fifth inning with a 10-0 victory over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Monday.

Jacob Hammer threw a no-hitter allowing two walks and striking out four.

Hammer, meanwhile, added a double offensively while Dakota Kuhlman and Braidin Baucum had a single, double and two RBI each. Noah Teasley had three singles and two RBI while Grant Schmidt had a single and drove in two runs.

Cumberland pounded Martinsville, 23-0 in five innings Monday.

The Pirates stepped out to a 6-0 opening inning lead and had a four-run second, a seven-run third and a six-run fourth.

Memphis Waggoner threw a one-hitter with no walks and eight strikeouts.

The Pirates were led in hitting by Michael Flier with a single, double and two RBI, Ross Hemmen with two singles, a double and an RBI, Dayton Mitchell with a single, double, home run and six RBI and Brennyn Cutts with a single, home run and three RBI. Alex Talley added two singles and two RBI.

Cumberland now sports a 12-2 record.
