EHS' Fleener Reaches 400th Coaching Victory

Effingham High School tallied a 4-3 victory over Shelbyville in baseball action Wednesday and that gave Coach Chris Fleener his 400th career victory as a coach
"I have been blessed to coach many great kids over the years," said Fleener. "It's been an honor to have Coach Diehl by my side since I started. He has been a key to our success on the ball diamond. Thank you to all the coaches, parents, fans and players who have been a part of Hearts baseball. I also want to thank my wife and kids for the sacrifices they make in the spring so I can do what I enjoy."
The Hearts opened up a 2-0 first inning lead. Shelbyville came back to take a 3-2 lead in the top of the fifth but the Hearts rebounded with a run to tie in the bottom of the frame. EHS then won the contest with a run in the bottom of the seventh.
EHS had six hits in the game led by Brayton Poland with a double, home run and three RBI. Jackson Lee had a single and drove in a run.
Matthew Loy started the contest going 2.2 innings, allowing two hits, one walk and striking out five. Poland was the winning pitcher coming on for 2.2 innings allowing no hits, no runs, one walk and striking out five.
The Hearts improve to a perfect 5-0 on the season.

At St. Anthony
St. Anthony and Kankakee Bishop McNamara were tied at 1-1 after the first inning and 2-2 after the second. But the Bulldogs got on a streak, scoring two in the third and tacking on single runs in the fifth and the sixth for a 6-2 win Wednesday.
The Bulldogs had three players with two hits each. Colton Fearday led the way with a single, double and an RBI while Dylan Guy and Collin Koester had two singles each. Gavin Braunecker had a double and drove in a run. Bryson Wall chipped in with a single and drove in two runs.
Jack Hoene picked up the win on the mound, going five innings, allowing two runs on 10 hits, no walks and striking out four. Logan Antrim picked up the save going two innings and allowing one hit.
The Bulldogs are now 6-1 on the season.

At Strasburg
It was a pitcher's game Wednesday as Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg edged Paris, 1-0.
The lone run came in the first inning for the Hatchets. WSS had only three hits in the contest, a double by Beau Bennett, a single by Logan Greuel and a single that scored the only run of the game by Gavan Wernsing.
Wernsing was the winning pitcher allowing one hit, no walks and striking out 13.
Paris had three pitchers, Johnson, Worrell and Farnham. Johnson gave up the lone run on one hit and one walk.

Stillman Valley tallied four in the third and never looked back.
The Indians had five hits led by Dakota Kuhlman with two singles and Jacob Robbins and Jacob Hammer had a double each.

Casey-Westfield claimed a 12-6 victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in baseball action Wednesday.
The Warriors had only one more hit than CHBC with 11. But CHBC committed five errors.
Four players had two hits for the winners. Thor Stepina had a single and double while Anthony Rodgers, Aaren Rodriguez and AJ Stepina had two singles and an RBI each.
CHBC was led by Quaid Schlanser with three singles and an RBI, Silas Buzzard with two singles and Mason Manley with a double and an RBI.

Cumberland pounded Arcola, 17-0 in Wednesday action.
The Pirates leaped out to an 11-0 first inning lead and finished the game in the fifth via the 10-run rule.
Cumberland had eight hits led by Justin Brown with a double and two RBI, Michael Flier with a double and an RBI and Reid Mathenia with two singles and three RBI.
Brayson Shew picked up the pitching win, going two innings, allowing no hits, no walks and striking out four. Memphis Waggoner came on to throw two innings, allowing no hits and striking out three. Ross Hemmen finished out the final inning allowing one hit, two walks and striking out three.
