LOS ANGELES -- Four hours after the start of the game, the St. Louis Cardinals picked up a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers Monday.

Matt Carpenter, Jedd Gyorko and Carlos Martinez provided the firepower with a home run each. Carpenter and Gyorko's hits on Sunday died in the outfield as the Cardinals lost. But this time around, the pair nailed ninth inning shots that broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Cardinals the two-run victory.

Austin Gomber started the game on the mound and lasted five innings, allowing five hits, two runs, four walks and four strikeouts.  Brett Cecil came in for one out and got the win. Cardinals pitchers gave up 10 walks in the game.

The Chicago Cubs' lead over the Cardinals is 3 1/2 games.

The Cardinals had five straight batters reach base in the fifth and that gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead. But the Dodgers struck back in the bottom of the fifth with two and tied in the seventh.

Gyorko sent the third pitch over the wall for his 11th home run in the ninth. Then two pitches later, Carpenter knocked one out.
