Newton advances in Senior Legion State Tourney

Newton Post 20 downed Elgin Post 57, 6-1 in Saturday action at the Senior Legion State Baseball Tournament in Alton.
Paul Thoele, of Dieterich, pitched the complete game victory giving up one earned run on eight hits, four strikeouts and two walks.
Newton scored a run in the fourth. Nate Meinhart led off with a double and was driven in with a two-out single by Thoele.
In the big four-run fourth, Mason Conlin singled with one out. Kendall Ferguson was safe on an error. Zach Jansen followed with a bunt single. Meinhart had the big blow, a three-run double up the left centefield gap. Then Noah Wagy singled him home.
Elgin scored a run in the sixth.Then Newton got it back in the top of the seventh. Kendall Ferguson led off with a walk and scored on a wild pitch.
In other games Saturday, Mount Prospect Post 525 defeated Milan Post 569, 3-0 and Danville Post 210 blanked Alton Post 126, 3-0.

Now 21-4, Newton will face Mount Prospect at noon today at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville. If Newton wins, it will play at 6 p.m., if the squad loses it will play at 4 p.m.
