CINCINNATI -- Daniel Poncedeleon had a Major League debut that will long be remembered Monday at Great American Ball Park.

Fourteen months after being hit in the head with a line drive that almost ended not only his career but his life, Poncedeleon carried a no-hitter through seven innings but the St. Louis Cardinals lost a heartbreaker to Cincinnati, 2-1.

Poncedeleon was starting for Triple A Memphis Redbirds May 9, 2017 when a line drive hit him on the right temple. He suffered a fracture and ended up having to have surgery to repair a bleed on the brain. The 26-year-old went through intensive rehab before being invited to spring training and coming out Monday to almost throw a no-hitter in his debut.

He did not allow a hit through seven, throwing 116 pitches. But after he was removed Phillip Ervin singled off Jordan Hicks in the eighth before Bud Norris allowed two two-out runs in the ninth giving the Reds the win.

Poncedeleon allowed three walks and had three strikeouts in his no-hit bid.

Diamondbacks 7, Cubs 1

Luke Farrell got a spot start for the Chicago Cubs but lasted only 3 1/3 innings, giving up five runs in first and a home run to Paul Goldschmidt in the second as the Cubs dropped a 7-1 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks Monday.

Farrell came in as a spot starter and left the game allowing six hits, two walks and striking out two to drop to 3-4 on the season. Three more Cubs relievers came on before Anthony Rizzo finished out the game getting the final out on the mound.

Rizzo also had a single and picked up the Cubs lone RBI in a busy day. Ian Happ had a double while Albert Almora Jr., Addison Russell and  Jason Heyward had a single each. Javier Baez led the Cubs with two singles.
