SAN FRANCISCO -- Kyle Hendricks did all he could do to get the Chicago Cubs a win over the San Francisco Giants Monday at AT&T Park.
Hendricks went to the mound, throwing 8.1 innings, allowing five hits, one run, one walk and striking out eight. His fastball was moving, his curve was upsetting the Giants and the changeup was doing what it should do.
Hendricks walked one with one out in the ninth so Randy Rosario came on to get the next two batters and the game went into extra innings.
The lone unearned run came in the fifth inning on an errant pickoff attempt in which Anthony Rizzo was charged with his second error of the game.
The Cubs offense wasn't on with only four hits. Ian Happ and Ben Zobrist got a double each while Albert Almora Jr. and Addison Russell had a single each. Russell garnered the RBI.
In the 11th inning, the Giants got two singles off Steve Cishek with one out on the board. In came Pedro Strop. Brandon Crawford was intentionally walked to load the bases and Pablo Sandoval nailed a walk-off single to left to lift the Giants to the win in the series opener.
Yu Darvish played catch before Monday's game for the first time since receiving a cortisone shot in his right arm June 29. Darvish has been on the sidelines since May 20 with tendinitis but is moving toward returning.
All-Star News
This year’s All-Star game Home Run Derby will be without New York Yankees Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.
Judge opted out because he wants to stay healthy after falling into a slump following last year’s Derby. However, Los Angeles Dodgers newcomer Max Muncy will take part.
San Francisco Giants catcher Buster Posey will miss the All-Star game because of a right hip issue. St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina will replace Posey on the NL roster.
Dodgers' Puig on DL
The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed Yasiel Puig on the 10-day DL with a right oblique sprain. Puig left Sunday night’s game against the Angels while batting in the fifth and manager Dave Roberts said Puig may be out until August.
Mets' Frazier on Disabled List
The New York Mets have placed third baseman Todd Frazier on the 10-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his left rib cage. It's the second time on the DL for Frazier since joining the Mets this season.
