NEW YORK -- Ben Zobrist knocked out a two-run homer as the Chicago Cubs handed the New York Mets a 5-1 loss in the series opener Thursday at Citi Field. The contest was played in foggy conditions.
Jose Quintana gave up just three hits over six innings. He struck out six and walked two. He struck out the side in the first inning, then had some trouble in the third when he walked two and gave up a double. But he managed to escape the bases-loaded situation.
Zobrist hit his two-run homer in the fifth and Kyle Schwarber came up with an RBI single in the sixth. Javier Baez had doubled and scored on Schwarber's hit.
Baez drew a walk in the ninth, the first that was unintentional this season. Another big event was a single by Tommy La Stella in the eighth. It was his 11th pinch hit this season.
Cardinals 10, Pirates 8
ST. LOUIS -- A three-run walk-off home run by Yairo Munoz rallied the St. Louis Cardinals in the bottom of the ninth. The end result, a 10-8 victory over Pittsburgh Thursday at Busch Stadium.
The Cardinals held a 5-4 lead through five innings but the Pirates came back with a four-run eighth to take an 8-5 lead. The Cardinals went through five relievers after Jack Flaherty left the game.
Dexter Fowler singled home two runs and Munoz doubled home two more in the four-run first inning. Then in the fifth, Greg Garcia's single scored Fowler to move the Cardinals ahead 5-4.
The bases were loaded and the Cardinals ahead in the seventh. Corey Dickerson grounded into a double play to end that threat.
