Alex Reyes came back from Tommy John surgery to start Wednesday's game at Milwaukee. But St. Louis Cardinals trainers converged on the mound in the fourth inning after Reyes' fastball started losing its speed and he was removed after 73 pitches.

It was a scoreless contest through four before Milwaukee scored in the fifth. St. Louis came back to take the lead in the seventh on Harrison Bader's game-tying home run. Tommy Pham pinch hit a sacrifice fly to give the Cardinals the lead.

But a half inning later, Christian Yelich hit a game-tying home run. Orlando  Arcia drove in the go-ahead run when he singled and the Brewers took the win, 3-2. The Cardinals mounted rallies in the eighth and ninth to no avail. They had two baserunners on in the ninth when Marcell Ozuna walked and Jedd Gyorko had an infield hit. But the Brewers got out of the inning for the win.

Pirates 2, Cubs 1

It was a tension-filled game as the Chicago Cubs were going for a sweep but Pittsburgh pulled out a 2-1 victory Wednesday at PNC Park.

Since the controversy swirling around Anthony Rizzo's slide Monday, it was a tense contest, especially when Joe Musgrove upended Javier Baez on a slide in the second inning. Musgrove was attempting to break up a double play. The benches cleared but was quickly over.

Albert Almora Jr. doubled in the first and scored on Baez's single. But Pittsburgh came back with two runs to upset any notion the Cubs had of sweeping.

Chicago loaded the bases in the first inning after Baez hit his RBI single. But the Cubs couldn't bring anyone else home. They stranded 11 baserunners.

Red Sox Release Ramirez

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly asked for unconditional release waivers on the contract of Hanley Ramírez. The club had designated him for assignment last Friday, although he’s still owed about $15 million of his $22 million contract.

Giants Place Samardzija on DL

The San Francisco Giants have placed pitcher Jeff Samardzija on the disabled list with right-shoulder tightness, but are hoping he’ll only miss one start.  Meanwhile, the Giants are due to get second baseman Joe Panik, reliever Mark Melancon and outfielder Hunter Pence back from the DL in time for tomorrow’s series opener against the Phillies.
