ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals produced only one run in a 5-1 loss to the Kansas City Royals and it came on a very strange play Tuesday at Busch Stadium.

Jose Martinez stole home when catcher Salvador Perez attempted to pick him off third. Martinez took off and had to head for home. He would have been thrown out, but third baseman Mike Moustakas dropped the throw from Perez and Martinez got the steal.

The Cardinals  left 13 runners on base.

St. Louis' Luke Weaver went seven innings, giving up three earned runs on an RBI double by Alcides Escobar and solo homers to Alex Gordon and Perez. Weaver had eight strikeouts and gave up one walk.

Royals' Jason Hammel struck out six for his first victory, going seven innings.

Indians 10, Cubs 1

CHICAGO -- Tyler Chatwood gave up six walks and only lasted until the third inning as the Chicago Cubs fell to the Cleveland Indians, 10-1.

The right-hander gave up a three-run homer to Jose Ramirez. In his last start against Cleveland, Chatwood gave up only two walks in 5 1/3 innings but couldn't find the range this time around.

Meanwhile, on the offensive side, the Cubs went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. The lone bright spot was a lead-off home run by Ian Happ in the ninth. It was his eighth of the season.

Jason Kipnis hit a two-run single in the fourth, and Yonder Alonso nailed a three-run double in the fifth, both off Mike Montgomery.

Mariners Place Gordon on Disabled List

The Seattle Mariners have placed leadoff hitter Dee Gordon on the 10-day disabled list with a fractured big right toe. Gordon injured his toe when he fouled a ball off his foot in Toronto on May 9th and has tried to play through the pain since then.

Mets Sign Bautista

The New York Mets have signed veteran slugger Jose Bautista to a one-year deal at the major league minimum of $545,000. Mets GM Sandy Alderson said Bautista provides outfield depth as the team battles injuries.

Fifty-three Year-Old Hits Homer

Rafael Palmeiro hit his first home run for the independent Cleburne Railroaders this week at the age of 53. Palmeiro and his son both play for the Texas team.
