ST. LOUIS -- Despite giving St. Louis seven good innings, Luke Weaver ended up with the loss as the Cardinals fell to Philadelphia Phillies, 6-2 Thursday.

Vince Velasquez was just better in keeping the Cardinals offstride. St. Louis left the bases loaded in the ninth and finished the game leaving seven on board over the final three innings.

Weaver ended up giving up one run on a homer by Carlos Santana in the fifth. He finished with a four-hitter, one walk and six strikeouts. The Phillies got to relievers Jordan Hicks and John Brebbia for five more runs.

A Matt Carpenter fly ball was turned into a double when the Phillies fumbled in the seventh and that put runners on second and third. But the Cardinals failed to score. Then in the eighth the Cardinals scored twice but the frame ended on a fly out.

Two times the Cardinals got runners thrown out trying to score.

Pirates Place Marte on Disabled List

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed center fielder Starling Marte on the disabled list due to a strained oblique. The Pirates will call up top prospect Austin Meadows to fill his roster spot.
