Newton Post 20 Falls At Division Tourney

HIGHLAND -- Newton Post 20 fell in opening round play at the Fifth Division Senior Legion Baseball Tournament Monday.

In the first contest, the Metro East Bears blanked Steeleville 11-0.

Then it was a 4-1 loss to Herrin for Newton Post 20. Newton scored its lone run in the sixth.

Newton had four hits, all singles by Matt Goedde, John Grunloh, Nick Cohorst and Tim Weber. Mitch Bierman had an RBI.

Paul Thoele picked up the pitching loss going 5 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on five hits, four walks and striking out two. Weber pitched 1/3 of an inning to record a strikeout.

In the final game of the day, Highland blanked Carmi 5-0.

Today's games feature Aviston against Metro East Bears at noon, Newton Post 20 against Carmi at 3 and Highland taking on Herrin at 7. Newton's contest is an elimination game.
