Post 120 Seniors Beat Newton; Shelby Co. Juniors Win

NEWTON -- The Effingham Post 120 Senior Legion baseball team travelled to Newton Wednesday and continued its winning ways by defeating Post 20, 6-2.
Newton enjoyed a one run lead until Lane Koenig hit a three-run home run in the third inning to put Post 120 in the lead for good. Brett Koester and Joe Kabbes limited Newton to just two runs on five hits through seven innings with Kabbes earning the pitching victory.
Koenig had two hits and four RBI, Kendall Ballman had three hits and an RBI and Brett Koester added a double and walk, scoring two runs. Cody Grove, Alec Morrissey, Zac Bateman and Joe Kabbes each had a hit for Post 120.
Newton has only two conference losses on the season, losing twice to Effingham.
Post 120 will travel to Busch Stadium where the team will do battle with the Flora Wolves immediately following the Cardinals/ Marlins game this afternoon. Local umpires Dennis and Josh Douthit will be umpiring the game today.
At Mattoon
Shelby County Junior Legion Posts 289-611-725 downed Mattoon Post 88, 9-2 in action Wednesday.
Shelby County broke a 1-1 opening inning tie with a five-run second and tallied single runs in the fourth, seventh and ninth innings.
Kentrell Beck had two singles, a double and three RBI for the winners while Colten Reed had two singles and Carson Rece Pullen had three singles and an RBI.
Beck was the winning pitcher on a one-hitter with six walks and three strikeouts.
