It would be tough to imagine a more dramatic win for the Effingham Hearts baseball team in the Class 3A Mahomet-Seymour Regional championship game against Apollo conference rival Charleston Saturday night, coming from behind to post a 6-5 victory.

Trailing by four going into the bottom of the sixth, the Hearts pushed across a couple of runs to make it 5-3 Charleston heading into the seventh.

The defense and pitching of Lane Koenig held the Trojans scoreless in the top of the inning to set the stage for the bottom of seventh. Charleston was unable to record an out as Effingham used a combination of a Charleston misplay, a few walks, and a hit to bring Brett Koester to the plate and he delivered the walk-off hit securing the victory and the regional title for the Hearts.

Koeing pitched a great game for Effingham earning the win going all seven innings. He struck out six without giving up a walk, allowing six hits. Although Koeing did give up fiveruns, only one was earned as the Hearts committed four errors in the game.

The offense was led by Brett Koester who was 2 for 3, had two RBI and walked twice. Zach Lee was 1 for 1 with a double, an RBI and walked three times. Mason Hull also doubled, while Brent Beals and Zac Bateman each singled.

Effingham moves on to sectional play Wednesday at 4:30 against sectional host Chatham Glenwood.
