Hearts Are Apollo Conference Baseball Champions

SALEM -- Effingham High School claimed the baseball championship of the Apollo Conference by sweeping a doubleheader over Salem Wednesday.

The Hearts won the opener 1-0, scoring the lone run in the second inning. EHS had five hits, all singles by Brett Koester, Lane Koenig, Zac Bateman, Zach Lee and Parker Seachrist. Seachrist drove in the lone run.

Koenig picked up the one-hit pitching win, allowing two walks and striking out eight.

The Hearts then swept the doubleheader with a 7-6 win. EHS took a 3-0 first inning lead then led 4-2 until the seventh. EHS tacked on three more runs and then had to hold off the Wildcats who scored four in the bottom of the seventh.

Ryan Sandifer had two singles and a double while Mason Hull had a single, double and three RBI. Koenig had a double and two RBI and Beals a double. Koester added two singles.

Lee started the game going 2.2 innings, allowing three hits, two runs, two walks and striking out two. He was the winning pitcher. Beals came on to go 3.1 innings, allowing five hits, three runs, two walks and striking out three. Hull finished up the final inning, allowing one hit, one run and striking out one.

In junior varsity action, Salem claimed both wins over the Hearts. Salem won the opener 6-5 and came back with a 10-0 win in the second game.
